However, many guys aren’t excited about graduation photos.
Maybe your mom is making you do it.
Or you’re unsure what to do with your hands.
Here’s the good news.
The best photos don’t look posed at all.
After photographing numerous WVU grads, I’ve learned which poses work.
They also reveal outfits and props that help guys feel comfortable.
Here are my favorite ideas for the moment.
Whether you’re graduating from WVU or anywhere else, they apply.

Easy Graduation Poses for Guys
The secret to great graduation photos for guys is giving you something to do. When your hands and body have a natural action, the stiffness disappears. With that in mind, these are the poses that work every time.
The lean is a relaxed pose.
Leaning casually against a wall, a column, or a railing with your hands in your pockets looks relaxed. Additionally, it instantly conveys confidence.
It’s one of the easiest poses for graduates who feel awkward in front of the camera.

The walk. Walking slowly toward the camera, or away and glancing back, creates movement and natural expressions. It also gives your gown a great sense of motion.

Sitting on the steps. Sitting on a set of stone steps with your elbows on your knees and your diploma or cap in hand is laid-back and classic. Campus staircases, like the ones around Woodburn Circle, are perfect for this.

The diploma hold. Hold your diploma cover at your side or in front of you and look straight into the camera for a confident, “I earned this” portrait. It’s the one your parents will frame.
Adjusting your cap or cuffs. Giving your hands a small task, like adjusting your cap, your tassel, or your watch, creates a natural, editorial look that feels effortless.
The look away. Glancing off to the side instead of at the camera makes for a thoughtful, candid-looking portrait that doesn’t feel forced.

Fun and Celebratory Poses for Guys
Now that you’ve nailed a few classic portraits, it’s time to have some fun. These shots really show your personality.
The champagne spray is popular. Additionally, it’s one of the top graduation photos for guys.
Next, shake it up. Then pop the cork and spray it into the air for an explosive celebration shot.
The cap toss is a classic. Furthermore, it’s even better when you toss it high and watch it come down with a big grin.
Also, a confetti burst in gold and blue adds instant energy.
If you’re celebrating with roommates or fraternity brothers, a group shot is a favorite. Additionally, it shows everyone tossing caps or spraying champagne together.

What Guys Should Wear for WVU Graduation Pictures
You don’t need to overthink your outfit, but planning makes a big difference. Under your gown, a well-fitting button-down shirt with chinos or dress pants is a safe choice. Solid colors or subtle patterns photograph best, while big logos and busy prints can distract from your face. Additionally, a light blue, white, or navy shirt pairs with WVU’s gold and blue for graduation photos.
Overall fit will make or break your outfit. Make sure your pants are hemmed to the right length and your shirt isn’t too baggy. For shoes, clean loafers, dress shoes, or crisp white sneakers all work, depending on your style. And don’t forget the details. A nice watch, a belt that matches your shoes, and a fresh haircut a few days before your session all show up in your photos.
Sessions move quickly, so there’s no need to bring a full second outfit. If you want to switch up your look, a quick layer does the trick. Throw on a WVU football jersey or varsity jacket over your shirt partway through, or bring a sport coat for a more polished look. Graduation Photo Props for Guys
The right prop gives you something to hold and tells your story at the same time. For example, a football, a baseball glove, or a jersey is perfect for athletes and die-hard Mountaineer fans. Meanwhile, fraternity letters or club gear show off the groups that shaped your college years. Props tied to your major—like a hard hat or stethoscope—also make your photos feel personal. Sunglasses are a fun prop for a few relaxed, cool-guy shots. For more ideas, check out my list of the best props for a college graduation session.

Tips for Guys Who Hate Having Their Picture Taken
If you’re dreading your graduation photos for gre, you’re not alone. Additionally, I promise it’s easier than you think. My number one tip is to let your photographer guide you. You don’t need to know how to pose. That’s my job, and I’ll walk you through every shot. Movement helps too. Walking, laughing, and interacting with your surroundings feels far more natural than standing still and smiling.
Bringing a friend can make a huge difference. When your roommate or best friend is behind me cracking jokes, the real laughs come out, and those are always the best photos. And finally, keep it short and simple. You don’t need a hundred different poses to get a great gallery. A handful of confident portraits and a few fun celebration shots are all it takes. WVU Graduation Photo Ideas for Guy Duos and Groups
Some of the best graduation photos happen when you’re not alone. Whether it’s your roommate, your best friend since first year, your fraternity brothers, or your whole intramural team, celebrating together takes the pressure off and brings out real laughs.
For duos, try a back-to-back pose with arms crossed for that confident, power-duo look, or a slow walk side by side while you talk about your favorite college memory. A classic handshake-turned-hug is always a hit, and a piggyback ride across Woodburn Circle is guaranteed to get your moms laughing.
For groups, a staggered lineup on the stone steps keeps everyone’s face visible and looks sharp. A V-formation, with one guy out front and the rest fanning out behind him, gives off serious team energy. Then let loose with a group champagne spray, a synchronized cap toss, or a laughing huddle. Fraternity brothers can show off their letters, teammates can bring their jerseys, and roommates can recreate a move-in photo from day one for a hilarious then-and-now comparison.
Calling All Guys and Their Friends
Here’s my invitation: I want to photograph more of you, including graduation photos for guys.
Solo grads, best-friend duos, roommates, fraternity brothers, teammates, and every crew in between.
However, too often guys skip graduation photos entirely, and years later they wish they had them.
Your graduation is a milestone, and you deserve photos that celebrate it with the guys who got you through it.
I promise it’s a fun hour with your friends, some champagne, a few cap tosses, and plenty of laughing, and you’ll walk away with photos you’ll actually want to post. Round up your roommates or your brothers, pick a time, and let’s make it happen. And moms and girlfriends, if you’re reading this, go ahead and send it to him. He’ll thank you later.
