real vs. faux flowers for your wedding day

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I love capturing fresh flowers for my wedding couples! There is something so beautiful about a unique, hand-crafted bridal bouquet with that fresh floral aroma. It always adds that special touch to any wedding celebration!

The most common question I hear in the wedding industry is, “What’s the point of spending so much money on real flowers when they will just wilt and die afterward?” Brides may decide on fake flowers to save money or stay within the budget for the wedding day. But are these types of flowers really worth it? Weddings can be expensive, but there are benefits to using fresh florals. Let’s compare real vs. faux flowers for your wedding day!

Better Wedding Day Photographs

After your wedding day, the only thing you have left is your pictures. There isn’t really a good way to photograph fake flowers in a way that makes them look like fresh blooms. If a craft store creates a fake bouquet, they won’t use good silk flowers. Real flowers have rich, deep, and organic colors that will always look nice on camera. When shooting details, I use some extra petals from an arrangement to highlight the wedding invitation and other items from the bride and groom. Whether shooting close up or further away, you can always spot fake flowers. As a wedding photographer, I agree with others in the industry that fresh flowers will always give your day a high-end look!

Fake Flowers Are More Expensive

It might be crazy to think that fake flowers are more expensive than real ones, but it’s true! If your goal is to use nice silk flowers for your wedding bouquets and centerpieces, you won’t find those at your local craft store. Florists use higher-end fake flowers to emulate real ones as much as possible. These types of flowers end up being more expensive because of the type of material used. Additionally, fake flowers harm the environment by eventually ending up in landfills.

Put Your Fresh Florals to Good Use

Spending money on fresh flowers for your wedding day goes much further than just your ceremony and reception. Donating your flowers to nursing homes, hospitals, and local charities is a great way to pay it forward and brighten up these types of locations. You can also have family members and wedding guests take home centerpieces and arrangements afterward. Their houses will smell amazing, and they will enjoy having them while you and your new spouse are on your honeymoon! Even better, if your florist buys their flowers from wholesale sellers, your flowers will last almost a week longer.

Preserving Your Wedding Bouquet

A wedding trend that has become popular over the last several years is preserving your wedding bouquet. This is a great way to remember what your bouquet looked like on your special day, and you can display it in your home. Businesses that specialize in this type of preservation use a method called resin encapsulation. Your real flowers can be pressed into a letter block or a frame.

Use Wood over Silk for Flowers

If you are set on using fake flowers for your wedding, it’s better to use wood than silk. Believe it or not, wood flowers actually photograph better than silk when comparing the two. These types of flowers create a softer appearance, won’t wilt, and look more like real flowers. Wood flowers are also environmentally friendly and can be recycled after your wedding day.

There truly is something special about using real vs. faux flowers for your wedding day! Fresh flowers create joy and happiness. I loved capturing Hannah and Logan’s wedding, as well as the wedding of Joey and Kelsey. They used either fresh flowers or wood flowers for their celebrations, and all of their arrangements were beautiful! Be sure to read their blogs for more wedding inspiration.

If you decide to include this in your budget, your wedding will look beautiful! However, if you use silk flowers, make sure that the bridal bouquet is either wood or real, as this will be the most photographed of all the wedding flowers. If you’re recently engaged, let’s discuss some dates for your photography needs!
